Dear Sir/Madam
Who We Are
Educating Athletes is a non-profit organization that aims to give underprivileged talented athletes the opportunity to be able to pursue their sporting goals without having to give up on their dream of completing their Grade 12 Matric qualification.
Why We Exist
As you know life has many events that are at times out of our control. We lose people we love, our possessions can get taken away from us and often we are left without hope. Yet one thing that cannot be taken away from us is the knowledge we have gained. For many children in South Africa, obtaining a Matric qualification is but a dream. Life’s more pressing issues take priority. Issues like having food and shelter for their brothers and sisters; like the need for a 15 year old to go out and earn a living to support their family; or a child being orphaned and lacking the necessary relational and financial support to follow their dreams. These and numerous other challenges are things that pull them away from finishing school. This is what robs them of the opportunity to be able to find stable jobs in the future. So what can be done?
How We Can Help
Educating Athletes strongly believes that an individual is the sum of many parts put together. Whether we go to work or are at home with our families, we take our whole selves wherever we go. We each use our knowledge and skill in our jobs, but at the same time, our character defines how we carry out what we do each day. For this reason Educating Athletes is committed to investing in the holistic development of the youth of South Africa. Our desire is to assist talented youth to complete their education, as well as creating an environment that will enable these athletes’ to develop positive character.
The organisation aims to achieve this by linking underprivileged talented athletes with individuals, families, businesses and/or companies who are able to sponsor that athlete’s education. Once the athlete applies and a sponsor is found for them the athlete is required to fulfill certain criteria throughout their academic year in order to maintain their sponsorship. The scholars will be obliged to partake in a monthly mental skills program called The Edge: Mental Skills Coaching for Athletes. The Edge is a program that runs at other sporting academies across Cape Town and South Africa. This equips the athletes with skills necessary both off and on the field. The athlete will also have access to monthly tutoring workshops where tutors will be made available to assist them with any academic difficulties they are facing. On a monthly basis a qualified representative from Educating Athletes will observe an athlete’s performance in their chosen sport. Each athlete will have access to a monthly individual counseling session if there is a need for this. Every term the athlete’s sponsor will receive a report of how the athlete is progressing in terms of their education, their sporting achievement and their character.
